The Kingdom of Heaven is Within
____________________________________________________________________________________________
Have you ever noticed that with certain people you feel completely at ease, and your breathing
is rhythmic, and you don’t have a care in the world???

It doesn’t matter what they say (dumb or otherwise) or even if they don’t say ANYTHING,
(especially when they don’t say anything) you feel ALL RIGHT????

I’m spending my time with THOSE people.

Yeah…’cause I can say anything and its cool, and they get me.
It’s like Anthony Hamilton’s Cool “If you’re cool, then I’m cool, then we’re cool”
It’s like Robin Thicke “Harmony”
It’s like Quadron “Baby Be Mine” and “Average Fruit”

Thinking About You by Frank Ocean

A tornado flew around my room before you came
Excuse the mess it made, it usually doesn’t rain
In Southern California, much like Arizona
My eyes don’t shed tears, but, boy, they pour when I’m thinkin’ ’bout you

[Bridge]
(Ooh, no, no, no)
I’ve been thinkin’ ’bout you (You know, know, know)
I’ve been thinkin’ ’bout you
Do you think about me still? Do ya, do ya?

[Hook]
Or do you not think so far ahead?
‘Cause I been thinking ’bout forever (Oooh, oooh)
Or do you not think so far ahead?
‘Cause I been thinking ’bout forever (Oooh, oooh)

[Verse 2]
No, I don’t like you, I just thought you were cool enough to kick it
Got a beach house I could sell you in Idaho
Since you think I don’t love you, I just thought you were cute
That’s why I kissed you
Got a fighter jet, I don’t get to fly it, though
I’m lyin’ down thinkin’ ’bout you

[Bridge & Hook]

[Verse 3]
Yes, of course
I remember, how could I forget?
How you feel
And though you were my first time
A new feel
It won’t ever get old, not in my soul
Not in my spirit, keep it alive
We’ll go down this road
‘Til it turns from color to black and white

[Hook]

I have spent some years, maybe decades, exploring, and finding myself in places where I knew my self, and yet still felt like “the other”. And in all these places, from big cities, and their suburbs and the top corporations…from Detroit, to Ann Arbor, to Chicago, to Peoria, IL, and the endless cornfields in Iowa, thru Seattle, WA and other western points, I have ALWAYS found kindred spirits…people of different race, socio-economic backgrounds, and experiences that I connected with deeply. Wherever we may start out, we’ve got to know and understand that we are merely spirits, and that life is tenuous, and fleeting. We are all going through the human experience…finding out our strengths, our weaknesses…we’re finding that we all have doubt…trials and tribulations. There’s nothing to be ashamed of in this human experience.

Having worked for most of my adult life in Purchasing, I’ve seen a lot of bluster and intimidation tactics, in companies from small organizations to multi-nationals. Honestly, I’ve seen so much, I’ve covered so much ground…I don’t know what I know, but I’ve learned so much, and no matter how someone might try to discount my experience and what I know, no matter what my current status is, I stand firmly knowing that none of my experiences can be taken from me, and what God has for me, is for me. No one can limit me, but me, because God wants to expand our territory. My travels don’t need to end, because there’s so much ground to cover, and so many folks need to see me…if only to confirm that you are not alone.

I want to Run to You

When you look at me, there’s so much that you don’t see…
…a girl that’s scared sometimes
I want to run to you

I was talking to my brother about tithing, and I referenced Malachi 3:10
“Bring you all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and test me now in this, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it”

It reminded me of an old flame, Malachi Hampton. I recalled our brief connection,
and how he played the sax, and that his sister was Dream Hampton, the first female writer
at Source magazine. Both Detroiters.

Simultaneously, I was reviewing Jay-z’s semi-autobiographical DECODED. At the same time Heavy D passed away. Strangely, I discovered that Dream Hampton was the barely mentioned co-author of DECODED, and also a former long term lover of Heavy D. Dream Hampton is also one of the best journalists/writers covering hip hop music and culture of all time.

I’m fascinated with the Hampton tribe, and other Detroiters/thought leaders, like Michael Eric Dickson. Detroit produces so much talent in this crucible. It’s interesting to note the range..from Big Meach Flenory, to Denmark West, to dream hampton. Detroiters have great reach once they leave the city.

JUDGE NOT/ Interior Spaces/ I could use somebody like you/ It’s LONELY at the TOP

I’m so glad that I my peops can understand me, and my range of experience. They understand that I connect with the streets, with the intellectuals, with the liberals, though I live conservatively in some respect. They understand that I have an appreciation for luxury, and yet I can’t disconnect from my humble roots. My peops understand my connection with the cream of the crop, as well as the “wretched of the earth”, and that I am a bridge of that gap that represents all that is between. The fact that my peops understand my leanings, my wide range of experience, is why I roll with them, why I roll among my hoodies, and those who will never know the hood experience. This is why I will always remain connected with my tribe.

tribe [trahyb] Show IPA noun
1.any aggregate of people united by ties of descent from a common ancestor, community of customs and traditions, adherence to the same leaders, etc.
2.a local division of an aboriginal people.
3.a division of some other people.
4.a class or type of animals, plants, articles, or the like.

It’s so exhilarating to have conversations with my siblings, my nephews, and family members who experience the same range of experience that I do.

As I tap more into my spirituality, I understand that my tribe transcends the tribe that I know in the world. My favorite cousin Michael came to visit me a few years ago, just months before he passed away, and gave me a very deep cryptic speech about how there’s a clan within the clan.
The timeliness of his visit, our long term connection, the specific things we discussed, the peace I always felt in his presence, and the fact that he sought me out just months before he passed away, underlines for me the truth.

In our conversation Mike, who had over 10 years at Faygo in Detroit, talked about his golfing skills, which were relatively newly acquired. Though he had only been golfing for 5 years, he had quickly mastered the sport, and was beating long term golfers (at Faygo) who had been practicing for decades. He was so excited about the sport, and the fact that he had clubs for his two boys, and was teaching them, what he knew. He encouraged me to actually show up at the golf league I had joined and give it a try. He said he would teach me. I could feel from his enthusiasm and experience that I probably shared the same gift. This was based on the fact that my brother gave me a brief understanding of form, and taught me how to shoot three pointers one day, and his teaching resulted in me being unable to miss three pointers…putting my darling boyfriend to shame.

My program, from my earliest remembrance is “Your family is all that you have”. And no matter the stakes, it remains my truth, whether it temporarily inhibits me or not. The richness of this experience, with my bi-polar poly-lingual sister, my absolutely driven, above average big sister, my driven, aggressive little brother, my BIG personality, people person Big brother. In my hood, and even among my extended family, my name is not known because of these extraordinary personalities. I’ve always been known as Lil Norm, Lil G, Big Silk, or Carla.

No one knows my name, but that doesn’t stop my influence. I’m right here in the middle of the mix. I find connection with extraordinary range of existence…I understand crack heads, drug dealers, white collar, blue collar, elite, and disenfranchised….the hopeless, the haves, the have nots.

I am Oliver Stone’s Ninja generation : No Money, No Job, No Income, No assets. And yet, I’m still rolling. And yet, I still relate, to those who are balling in this “famine” and those who are suffering through this “famine”. And while this major global shift is happening, there are people who are suffering physically, mentally, financially.

I took my niece and nephew out to dinner recently at our favorite kid spot RED ROBIN. While we sat, a great song came on, and I laughed at my nephew because of he way he enjoyed the song. He asked me why I was laughing, and I told him the truth… I LOVE this song, I was thrilled that he connected with it, and was singing his little heart out. Especially after reading about the Followill family, and knowing their Christian background. The message has reach, and that’s all me…How far can you reach, teach, change lives? How much can you give? What is our common ground?

Even if you don’t know it, you’ve got something to give, you can do something to change somebody else’s life for the better. Be the best person you can be, because eyes are watching. This is why we shine. And what you bring to the table, you don’t even know that it’s keeping a whole bunch of other people going. So don’t give up, no matter what.

Keep it Rolling…Shine, Glow as much as you can. Do what you can with your resources. This is how you make a difference.

If you examine their lyrics, Kings of Leon is disseminating God’s call: “I need you where you are…broken wings, broken dreams, broken…I need you where you are, where you stand. “I can use someone like you” God needs soldiers who walk into dark places, with understanding from experience, or just knowing, to reach out to those that are in need. Never need to be ashamed or try to understand why you happen to be where you are…you’re there for a reason. Fulfill the purpose.

Kings of Leon USE SOMEBODY
I been roaming around…
always looking down at places I see
painted faces, gilded places
I can’t reach,

You know that I could use somebody…
Someone like you, and all you know, and how you speak…
countless lovers under cover
under street

You know, that I could use somebody
You know that I could use somebody
someone like you…
I could use somebody
I could use somebody
someone like you.

All in the night,
while you live it up,
I’m off to sleep

I hope it’s gonna make you notice
I hope it’s gonna make you notice
someone like me
someone like me
someone like me

somebody
Awww…let it out
Awww…let it out
Awww…let it out

someone like you,
somebody
someone like you,
somebody,
I been roaming aroud
always looking down
at all I see…

The Right Thing To do is AUTOMATIC

Your eyes are so Beautiful
But, if I can’t see them
How will I know you?

By the breath that you take
the air that you breathe
The peace that unfolds
every time that you speak

yeah…the sun is shining on you
the feeling that I get when I
spend time with you

I connect 2 the soul of you
I’ve been knowing you
Because I came from you
and you came from me

I know when you’re hurting,
because, when you’re hurting,
I’m hurting too.

  1. I saw Fela in New York with my daughter last fall. It was powerful. I didn’t know that it was produced by Will, Jada, and Jay-Z! This gives me hope when our folks with money and influence decide to invest in our community and make deposits in our souls.

Fela’s story is one that everyone should know about but would not be readily shared comming from the oppressor. Fela demonstrated belief in his own art and his own power to affect change in the Nigerian style “jim crow” atmosphere. I learned from this production that Fela gained momentum in his cause after visiting the US during the Civil Rights days. One memorable scene depicts Fela and his family beginning to read and read and read and read. By reading, Fela gained a broad historical context for the Nigerian experience.

If you don’t know him, read about him. His music is awesome, too.
